Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and analyze the pattern of hs-cTn release following running.
  • To determine the prevalence of elevated hs-cTn levels in runners post-exercise.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic literature search was conducted across PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Scopus.
  • Ten studies, published between 2009 and 2013, involving 479 participants were included.
  • Data on post-running hs-cTn levels compared to the 99th percentile reference value were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Eight studies utilized hs-cTn T, and two used hs-cTn I.
  • Out of 424 participants with available data, 296 (69.8%) exhibited post-running hs-cTn values above the 99th percentile reference.
  • Elevated hs-cTn levels were observed in more than two-thirds of runners.

Conclusions:

  • Running frequently leads to elevated hs-cTn levels detectable by sensitive assays.
  • The reversibility of this troponin release and its long-term cardiovascular health effects in runners are currently unknown.
