Background:

  • Schizophrenia research has a paucity of computed tomography (CT) studies from developing countries.
  • Schizophrenia in developing countries is reported to have a more favorable outcome and present predominantly with positive symptoms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct densitometric analysis of frontal and parietal brain areas in individuals with schizophrenia in a developing country.
  • To investigate the relationships between brain density values and clinical and CT measures in schizophrenia.

Main Methods:

  • Densitometric analysis of frontal and parietal regions of interest on CT scans.
  • Comparison of 50 schizophrenic, 14 manic, and 41 normal subjects.
  • Assessment of schizophrenic patients using Andreasen's scale for negative symptoms and evaluation of outcome based on social and clinical condition.

Main Results:

  • Schizophrenics and manics showed significantly higher frontal density than normals.
  • Schizophrenics exhibited significantly higher parietal density than manics and normals (p < 0.001).
  • Parietal density was significantly higher than frontal density in schizophrenics and normals (p < 0.001).
  • Brain density values did not correlate significantly with CT measures of atrophy, duration of illness, outcome, or negative symptoms.

Conclusions:

  • Schizophrenia in developing countries is associated with non-specific brain abnormalities.
  • Densitometric differences in frontal and parietal areas exist between patient groups and controls.
