Researchers identified 15 compounds from Sophora flavescens Ait., with six new to the Sophora genus. This study advances the understanding of Sophora flavescens phytochemistry.

Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry

Background:

  • Sophora flavescens Ait. is a traditional medicinal plant with a rich history of use.
  • The chemical constituents of S. flavescens are diverse and contribute to its biological activities.
  • Further investigation is needed to fully characterize its phytochemical profile.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify chemical compounds from the stems, leaves, and roots of Sophora flavescens Ait.
  • To report novel compounds isolated from the Sophora genus.

Main Methods:

  • Compounds were extracted from different parts of S. flavescens.
  • Isolation was achieved using silica gel column chromatography and preparative High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).

  • Structural elucidation was performed using spectroscopic methods, including proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H-NMR), carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (13C-NMR), and Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS).
  • Main Results:

    • Fifteen compounds were isolated and identified: corchionoside C (1), syringing (2), 2 -deoxythymidin (3), coniferin (4), benzyl O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (5), piscidic acid (6), trifolirhizin (7), kurarinone (8), trifolirhizin-6 -monoacetate (9), sophoraflavanone G (10), isoxanthohumol (11), noranhydroicaritin (12), 4 -methoxyisoflavone-7-O-beta-D-apiofuranosyl-(1 --> 6)-beta-D-glucopyranoside (13), kushenol O (14), and 6"-beta-D-xylopyranosylgenistin (15).
    • Compounds 1-6 were reported as being isolated from the Sophora genus for the first time.
    • Six compounds were isolated from the stems and leaves, while ten compounds were isolated from the roots.

    Conclusions:

    • The phytochemical investigation of Sophora flavescens Ait. led to the identification of 15 compounds.
    • The discovery of six novel compounds for the Sophora genus expands the known chemical diversity of this plant.
    • These findings contribute valuable information to the phytochemistry of Sophora species.
