Transanal resection in the palliation of rectal cancer

Transanal resection of rectal tumours employs a technique similar to transurethral resection of the prostate, using a modified urological resectoscope with continuous fluid irrigation. It is applicable to locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancers, villous adenomas, and some early carcinomas. The technique avoids interference with anal sphincter function and is well tolerated by unfit and elderly patients. It provides good relief from tenesmus, bleeding, diarrhoea, mucous discharge, and obstruction, and is readily repeatable. Transanal resection is a useful addition to conventional techniques in the treatment of rectal cancer.
