Background:

Substance abuse among nurses poses risks to patient safety and nurse well-being.
Historically, research on nurse impairment has focused less on student nurses' perceptions.
Recent increases in substance abuse rates underscore the need for updated research.

Purpose of the Study:

To explore how formal substance abuse education influences student nurses' perceptions of chemically dependent nurses.
To assess changes in student nurses' attitudes towards impaired colleagues after educational intervention.

Main Methods:

A quasi-experimental, two-group, pretest-posttest design was employed.
The Perception of Nurse Impairment Inventory (PNII) measured student attitudes before and after education.
A control group of sophomore students did not receive the educational intervention.

Main Results:

Student nurses receiving substance abuse education demonstrated more compassionate responses on the PNII.
Educated students were more likely to attribute responsibility to supervisors for guiding impaired nurses toward professional care.
Findings suggest education positively impacts student nurses' views on impaired colleagues.

Conclusions:

Substance abuse education can foster more empathetic and supportive attitudes among student nurses towards impaired peers.
Educational interventions may be crucial for shaping future nursing professionals' responses to substance abuse within the profession.
Further research is needed to determine optimal education length and type for maximum impact.
