Summary

Optic nerve head drusen are associated with significantly smaller optic disc areas. This finding suggests mechanical compression from a small optic nerve scleral canal may contribute to drusen formation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the absolute optic disc size in eyes with optic nerve head drusen.
  • To investigate the relationship between optic disc size and drusen formation.

  • Littmann's method was used to correct magnification in central fundus photographs.
  • Absolute optic disc area was measured in 26 eyes with visible optic nerve head drusen.

    • Abnormally small optic discs, potentially due to a small optic nerve scleral canal, may cause mechanical compression of axonal flow.
    • This compression is hypothesized to contribute to the formation of optic nerve head drusen.
    • Pseudoneuritis associated with small optic discs may precede acquired optic nerve head drusen.
