Summary

Serum galectin-1 levels did not differ between systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients and healthy individuals. However, higher galectin-1 may protect against digital vasculopathy in SSc.

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by fibrosis and vasculopathy.
  • Digital vasculopathy, including pitting scars and digital ulcers, is a common and debilitating complication of SSc.
  • The role of specific biomarkers in predicting SSc complications requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum galectin-1 levels in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
  • To explore the clinical associations of galectin-1 levels with SSc manifestations, particularly digital vasculopathy.

Main Methods:

  • Serum galectin-1 levels were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
  • The study included 66 patients diagnosed with SSc and 24 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to compare galectin-1 levels between groups and correlate them with clinical features.

Main Results:

  • Serum galectin-1 levels showed no significant difference between SSc patients and healthy individuals.
  • No significant variations in galectin-1 levels were observed between diffuse and limited cutaneous SSc subtypes.

  • Galectin-1 levels were significantly lower in SSc patients presenting with pitting scars/digital ulcers than in those without these complications (6.9 ± 4.8 vs. 10.9 ± 5.5 ng/mL, P < 0.01).

Conclusions:

  • Galectin-1 appears to act as a protective factor against the development of digital vasculopathy in systemic sclerosis.
  • Serum galectin-1 measurement could serve as a valuable tool for risk stratification of digital vasculopathy in early-stage SSc.
  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms underlying galectin-1's protective role in SSc vasculopathy.
