Area of Science:
- Medical Entomology
- Parasitology
- Pediatric Surgery
Background:
- Wound myiasis in the Indian subcontinent is predominantly caused by the Old World screw-worm fly, Chrysomya bezziana.
- Rectal myiasis is an uncommon presentation, particularly in pediatric cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report a rare case of rectal myiasis with full-thickness rectal prolapse in a malnourished child.
- To describe the successful management of this complex pediatric case.
Main Methods:
- A 4-year-old girl with rectal myiasis and prolapse was treated.
- Turpentine oil was used to immobilize maggots before manual extraction.
- Rectal prolapse was managed through manual reduction and buttock strapping.
Main Results:
- The child's rectal myiasis and prolapse were successfully treated.
- The patient showed positive outcomes, gaining 2 kg weight within two weeks post-treatment.
Conclusions:
