Pulmonary Function Tests

1.2K
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs)
Pulmonary Function Tests are crucial diagnostic tools for assessing respiratory function, particularly in patients with chronic respiratory disorders. They comprehensively evaluate lung volumes, ventilatory function, breathing mechanics, diffusion, and gas exchange. These tests help diagnose pulmonary diseases and play a significant role in monitoring disease progression, evaluating disability, and assessing response to therapy.
PFTs involve using a spirometer, a...

Area of Science:

  • Sports Medicine
  • Disability Sport
  • Medical Evaluation

Background:

  • Standardized preparticipation examinations (PPEs) exist for able-bodied athletes.
  • A validated PPE equivalent is lacking for athletes with disability (AWD).
  • Increasing AWD participation necessitates evidence-based health and safety assessment tools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a standardized PPE history evaluation tailored for AWDs.
  • To establish consensus-based expert recommendations for AWD PPE.

Main Methods:

  • A structured Delphi method was employed with an expert panel.
  • Three survey rounds with controlled feedback were used to collect and interpret expert opinions.
  • Content validity of the PPE history was critically evaluated by physiotherapists, sports medicine physicians, and physiatrists.

Main Results:

  • Consensus was reached on 49 out of 54 proposed items for the AWD-specific PPE history.
  • A refined ten-section document was created to supplement existing PPE tools.
  • Modifications were made to five items that did not achieve statistical consensus.

Conclusions:

  • A consensus-driven PPE history tool for AWDs has been developed.
  • The tool includes disability-related history and functional review, ready for clinical use.
  • Further research on equipment issues and injury in AWDs is recommended for future refinement.
