Single incision laparoscopic surgery for pediatric kidney removal is a safe and effective technique. This minimally invasive approach offers excellent cosmetic results and faster recovery for children undergoing nephrectomy or nephroureterectomy.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Urology
- Minimally Invasive Surgery
- Laparoscopic Techniques
Background:
- Nonfunctioning kidneys in children necessitate surgical intervention.
- Traditional laparoscopic surgery involves multiple incisions.
- Advancements in surgical technology enable new minimally invasive approaches.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of single incision laparoscopic nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy in pediatric patients.
- To present a recent videoscopic innovation in pediatric urological surgery.
Main Methods:
- Seven pediatric patients underwent transperitoneal nephrectomy or nephroureterectomy using a single umbilical port.
- Indications included multicystic dysplastic kidneys, end-stage renal disease due to vesicoureteral reflux, and giant hydronephrosis.
- Operative times ranged from 50 to 90 minutes.
Main Results:
- No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed.
- Patients were discharged on the third postoperative day.
- All incision scars were concealed within the umbilicus, providing excellent cosmetic outcomes.
Conclusions:
- Single transumbilical port nephrectomy/nephroureterectomy is a feasible and effective technique in children.
- Advantages include reduced recovery time, superior cosmetic results, and fewer wound complications.
- Further research is needed to define specific indications for single-site laparoscopic procedures in pediatric urology.
