Uterus and Cervix01:18

Uterus and Cervix

8.4K
The uterus, commonly called the womb, is a vital reproductive organ in females designed to provide a nurturing environment for the implantation and growth of an embryo. It is shaped like a hollow pear and positioned between the urinary bladder and the rectum. The uterus's structure allows it to support and protect a developing fetus throughout pregnancy.
The uterus is securely anchored within the pelvic cavity by paired broad ligaments on either side. It is further stabilized by three pairs...

Uterine Tubes

4.1K
The uterine or fallopian tubes function as the conduit through which oocytes travel from the ovaries to the uterus. Each fallopian tube measures approximately 10 to 13 cm long and is anatomically divided into the infundibulum, ampulla, isthmus, and interstitial part (or intramural segment). The infundibulum is characterized by its funnel shape and features extensions called fimbriae which reach towards the peritoneal cavity. These fimbriae play a critical role during ovulation as they extend...

Histology of the Uterus01:19

Histology of the Uterus

5.0K
The uterine wall consists of three histological layers: the perimetrium, myometrium, and endometrium. The outermost perimetrium is a thin, serous membrane connected with the broad ligament on the sides, which helps anchor the uterus in the pelvic cavity. The thickest layer, myometrium, is mainly made up of smooth muscle tissue bundles. Its contractions are vital in facilitating the expulsion of the uterine lining, fetus, and placenta during menstruation and childbirth.
The endometrium is the...

    Area of Science:

    • Gynecologic Oncology
    • Pathology
    • Clinical Guidelines

    Background:

    • Endometrial cancer is the most common female genital tract malignancy in the United States.
    • Uterine sarcomas are rare, comprising about 3% of all uterine cancers.
    • Uterine neoplasms encompass both epithelial carcinomas and mesenchymal tumors, each with distinct management needs.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To provide an excerpt of the NCCN Guidelines for Uterine Neoplasms.
    • To focus on the management of early-stage uterine neoplasms.
    • To differentiate between malignant epithelial carcinomas and uterine sarcomas.

    Main Methods:

    • Review and summarization of the NCCN Guidelines for Uterine Neoplasms.
    • Focus on early-stage disease classifications.
    • Categorization of uterine neoplasms into epithelial and mesenchymal subtypes.

    Main Results:

    • Adenocarcinoma of the endometrium is the most frequent malignancy of the female genital tract in the US.
    • An estimated 49,560 new cases and 8190 deaths were projected for 2013.
    • Uterine sarcomas are uncommon, representing approximately 3% of uterine cancers.

    Conclusions:

    • Management strategies differ significantly between histologic groups of uterine neoplasms.
    • This excerpt specifically addresses early-stage disease.
    • Accurate histologic classification is crucial for appropriate patient management.
