Association between hypoxia and perinatal arterial ischemic stroke: a meta-analysis

Perinatal hypoxia factors are significantly associated with perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (AIS). This meta-analysis suggests hypoxia may be a cause of AIS, warranting further large-scale studies.

- Significant associations found between AIS and preeclampsia (OR 2.14), ventouse delivery (OR 2.23), fetal heart rate abnormalities (OR 6.30), reduced fetal movement (OR 5.35), meconium-stained liquor (OR 3.05), low Apgar score (OR 5.77), and resuscitation at birth (OR 4.59).
- No significant association was found for oxytocin induction (OR 1.33).
- A significant association was noted for low arterial umbilical cord pH (OR 4.63).
Conclusions:
- Perinatal hypoxia factors are significantly associated with perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (AIS).
- The findings support the hypothesis that perinatal hypoxia is a contributing factor to AIS.
- Further large-scale prospective clinical studies are recommended to confirm these associations.
