Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) did not acutely improve olfactory function in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. This study found no significant difference in smell tests when STN-DBS was on or off.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Neuroscience
- Olfactory Research
Background:
- Olfactory dysfunction is a prevalent early non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD).
- Previous research suggested potential benefits of subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS) for olfactory deficits in PD.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the acute impact of bilateral STN-DBS on olfactory function in Parkinson's disease patients.
- To assess olfactory identification performance using a standardized smell test.
Main Methods:
- Recruited 15 Parkinson's disease patients undergoing bilateral STN-DBS and 15 healthy controls.
- Administered an odor identification test to patients (both ON and OFF STN-DBS) and controls.
Main Results:
- No statistically significant differences in olfactory identification were observed between ON and OFF STN-DBS states in PD patients.
- Control participants demonstrated superior olfactory identification performance compared to PD patients.
Conclusions:
- This exploratory study does not provide evidence supporting an acute beneficial effect of bilateral STN-DBS on olfactory function in Parkinson's disease.
- Further research may be needed to explore long-term effects or alternative neuromodulation strategies for olfactory dysfunction in PD.
