Lowered adiponectin levels are linked to alexithymia, suggesting an altered anti-inflammatory balance in individuals with alexithymic features. This highlights the role of immune system changes in alexithymia.
Area of Science:
- Psychoneuroimmunology
- Metabolic disease research
Background:
- Alexithymia is associated with altered cytokine profiles.
- Adiponectin and resistin are key adipokines with immunomodulatory roles.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the independent association of adiponectin and resistin with alexithymic features.
- To examine these relationships in a population-based sample.
Main Methods:
- Utilized data from the Kuopio Depression Study general population sample (n=308).
- Compared subjects with high alexithymic features (n=85) to non-alexithymic controls (n=206) based on Toronto Alexithymia Scale scores.
- Assessed serum adiponectin and resistin levels.
Main Results:
- Significantly lower serum adiponectin levels were observed in subjects with alexithymic features.
- No significant difference in resistin levels between groups.
- Logistic regression confirmed lower adiponectin, but not resistin, associated with alexithymia, even after adjusting for multiple confounders.
Conclusions:
- Findings suggest a disturbed anti-inflammatory balance in alexithymia.
- Results expand the understanding of alexithymia, implicating immune system alterations and stress.
