Steam flash explosion (SFE) significantly enhances poultry feather digestibility. This process improves feather meal bio-utilization by increasing pepsin digestibility up to ninefold.
Area of Science:
- Biotechnology
- Materials Science
- Animal Science
Background:
- Poultry feathers are abundant but underutilized due to poor digestibility.
- Natural feathers are often classified as solid waste, posing environmental challenges.
- Improving feather digestibility is key to unlocking their potential as a valuable resource.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the efficacy of steam flash explosion (SFE) in enhancing duck feather digestibility.
- To determine the optimal SFE conditions for maximizing feather meal's pepsin digestibility.
- To analyze the structural changes in feathers post-SFE, focusing on disulfide bonds and secondary structures.
Main Methods:
- Duck feathers were treated using steam flash explosion (SFE) at pressures from 0.5 to 2.5 MPa for 1 minute.
- Pepsin digestibility assays were performed on native and SFE-treated feather meals.
- Disulfide bond content and β-sheet structure (a major secondary component) were analyzed before and after SFE treatment.
Main Results:
- SFE significantly increased the pepsin digestibility of feather meal.
- Optimal SFE conditions (1.8 MPa, 1 min) yielded a pepsin digestibility of approximately 91%, a ninefold increase over native feathers.
- Increased pepsin digestibility correlated strongly with reduced disulfide bonds (R² = 0.98) and negatively with β-sheet content.
Conclusions:
- Steam flash explosion is a highly effective method for improving the bio-utilization of poultry feather waste.
- SFE treatment restructures feathers, reducing disulfide bonds and increasing susceptibility to enzymatic digestion.
- This process offers a sustainable solution for converting feather waste into a valuable, digestible protein source.
