Summary

In children with functional constipation, serum ghrelin levels were initially lower than in healthy controls. Treatment increased ghrelin, suggesting low levels may result from constipation, not cause it.

  • Included 43 newly diagnosed constipated children (1-6 years) and 25 healthy controls.
  • Measured serum ghrelin levels before and after a two-month treatment protocol (diet, lactulose, enema).

  • Constipated children had significantly lower initial serum ghrelin levels compared to controls (p<0.001).
  • Serum ghrelin levels increased significantly after two months of treatment in constipated children (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

  • Findings suggest a potential role for ghrelin in childhood functional constipation.
  • The increase in ghrelin levels with treatment supports the hypothesis that low ghrelin may be a consequence, not a cause, of constipation.
