Utility values in Brazilian patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) were identified. Advanced vision loss, measured by visual acuity (VA) and mean deviation index, significantly lowered these utility values.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Health Economics
- Quality of Life Research
Background:
- Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
- Understanding patient-reported outcomes, such as utility values, is crucial for treatment evaluation.
- Limited data exists on utility values for POAG patients in Brazil.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine utility values in Brazilian patients diagnosed with POAG.
- To assess the impact of visual acuity (VA) and mean deviation index on these utility values.
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study involving 227 consecutive POAG patients.
- Utility values were measured using time trade-off (TTO) and two standard gamble methods (SG1, SG2).
- Visual function (VA, mean deviation index) and sociodemographic data were collected for analysis.
Main Results:
- Mean utility values were 0.82 (TTO), 0.90 (SG1), and 0.93 (SG2).
- Age, race, and sex did not influence utility values; higher education showed a trend towards higher TTO values.
- Worse visual function (lower VA, higher mean deviation index) correlated with lower utility values across all methods.
Conclusions:
- This study provides utility values for Brazilian POAG patients.
- Utility values are significantly affected by the severity of vision loss in POAG.
- These findings can inform health policy and economic evaluations for glaucoma management.
