Summary

Balloon dilatation for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) showed limited improvement in uroflow. Further studies with larger balloons are needed to assess effectiveness for urinary outflow obstruction.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) commonly causes lower urinary tract symptoms.
  • Improving uroflow is a key goal in managing BPH.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of balloon dilatation of the prostatic urethra for treating BPH.
  • To assess the impact of a 36F balloon dilator on uroflow and clinical symptoms over two years.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized, blinded study comparing balloon dilatation (n=5) to observation (n=3).
  • A 36F balloon was inflated in the prostatic urethra under local anesthesia and fluoroscopic guidance for 30 minutes.
  • Patients were monitored for two years post-procedure.

Main Results:

  • Two of five treated patients showed improved uroflow and symptom stabilization.
  • Two treated patients required prostatectomy; one shortly after dilatation.
  • One of three control patients required prostatectomy; two continued to have obstructive symptoms.
