Summary

Reduced phase-locking in delta and theta brainwaves is linked to externalizing psychopathology. This brain activity difference may explain lower P3 event-related potential (ERP) amplitudes in individuals with these conditions.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if differences in task-induced phase-locking of delta and theta frequencies in EEG explain P3 amplitude deficits associated with externalizing disorders.
  • To determine if reduced phase-locking mediates the relationship between evoked P3 energy and externalizing diagnoses.

Main Methods:

  • Adult males (N=410) performed a visual oddball task.
  • Investigated frontal and parietal P3-related delta and theta band phase-invariant evoked energy and inter-trial phase-locking.
  • Examined associations with the externalizing spectrum (substance dependence, antisociality, disruptive disorders).

Main Results:

  • Lower evoked energy and phase-locking in both delta and theta bands at frontal and parietal sites were associated with increased odds of externalizing diagnoses.
  • Models incorporating phase-locking showed improved prediction of externalizing diagnoses compared to evoked energy alone.
  • Reduced theta-band phase-locking partially mediated the impact of evoked energy on externalizing prediction.

Conclusions:

  • Inter-trial phase-locking in the P3 underlies a key distinction between individuals with externalizing disorders and control subjects.
  • Increased phase-variability in externalizing-diagnosed individuals may indicate impaired top-down neuromodulatory system tuning.
