Appendicitis is an acute inflammatory condition of the vermiform appendix, most commonly caused by obstruction of its lumen. The appendix is a narrow, blind-ended pouch that extends from the cecum, making it particularly prone to obstruction. Summary

Retroperitoneal hydatid cysts are rare but can cause significant symptoms. This case highlights the importance of considering unusual locations for hydatid disease, even in endemic areas.

Background:

  • Hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus tapeworms, typically affect the liver and lungs.
  • Retroperitoneal hydatid cysts are exceptionally uncommon presentations of this parasitic disease.

  • A 45-year-old female presented with back pain, weight loss, and fatigue.
  • CT imaging revealed a large, septated cystic lesion in the retroperitoneum, adjacent to the left kidney and causing vertebral destruction.
  • Surgical excision and drainage were performed, with histopathology confirming a hydatid cyst.

Findings:

  • The patient recovered well post-surgery and received albendazole treatment.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst.
  • The retroperitoneal location and associated symptoms were successfully managed.
