Cancer Prevention

6.5K
Several factors can increase the risk of cancer in an individual. About 50% of cancer cases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise, eating healthy, and following a modest cancer prevention diet. Epidemiological studies have consistently shown that populations with vegetable and fruit-rich diets have reduced the incidence of cancer. On the other hand, populations who have a diet rich in animal fat, red meat, junk food, or high calories are predisposed to cancer.

Area of Science:

  • Natural Product Chemistry
  • Ethnomedicine
  • Pharmacognosy

Background:

  • Derris eriocarpa (Leguminosae) is an ethnomedicinal plant with potential bioactive compounds.
  • Isolation and characterization of phytochemicals are crucial for understanding medicinal properties.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and characterize new chemical entities from Derris eriocarpa stems.
  • To evaluate the antimicrobial potential of the newly identified compounds.

Main Methods:

  • Phytochemical investigation involving isolation techniques.
  • Structure elucidation using spectroscopic methods, including 2D NMR.
  • Antimicrobial activity testing using minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays.

Main Results:

  • Isolation of one new resveratrol analogue (1) and two new prenylisoflavones (2, 3).
  • Identification of one new natural product (4) and 17 known compounds.
  • Compound 2 demonstrated potent antimicrobial activity against Candida guilliermondii, C. albicans, and Microsporium gypseum (MIC = 12.5 μg/ml).

Conclusions:

  • The study successfully identified novel compounds from Derris eriocarpa.
  • The isolated prenylisoflavone (2) exhibits promising antimicrobial properties, warranting further investigation.
