    Summary

Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using the suture bridge technique significantly improved patient outcomes and shoulder function. While effective, older patients (>60) showed higher rates of fatty degeneration and re-tears.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedic Surgery
    • Sports Medicine
    • Biomechanical Engineering

    Background:

    • Rotator cuff tears are common, leading to pain and functional limitations.
    • Arthroscopic repair aims to restore function and integrity of the rotator cuff.
    • The suture bridge technique is a modern approach for rotator cuff repair.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using the suture bridge technique.
    • To assess the integrity and healing of the repaired rotator cuff.
    • To identify factors influencing repair success and patient recovery.

    Main Methods:

    • Fifty-six patients with total thickness rotator cuff tears underwent arthroscopic repair.
    • Follow-up averaged 19 months, with clinical assessment using the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) scale.
    • Repair integrity was evaluated postoperatively using imaging and by analyzing recovery times.

    Main Results:

    • Significant improvement in UCLA scores from a mean of 13.2 to 29.7 (p<0.001).
    • Complete rotator cuff healing observed in 66.7% of the 56 assessed shoulders.
    • Increased incidence of fatty muscle regeneration and recurrent tears in patients over 60 years old (p=0.002 and p<0.001, respectively).

    Conclusions:

    • The suture bridge technique provides significant pain relief and improves range of motion.
    • Advantages include less restrictive immobilization and enhanced repair stability due to the double-band configuration.
    • The technique offers greater tear defect coverage and secure fixation, promoting successful healing.
