Summary

The EndoSAMURAI multitasking platform enables precise natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) skills like cutting and suturing. While slower than laparoscopy, it offers comparable accuracy and gastric closure integrity in biosimulation models.

Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Surgical Technology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES) requires advanced multitasking platforms for complex procedures.
  • Evaluating new surgical instrumentation is crucial for advancing minimally invasive techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the fundamental capabilities of the prototype "EndoSAMURAI" multitasking platform.
  • To compare the performance of the EndoSAMURAI platform against standard laparoscopic instruments.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a biosimulation model and ex vivo porcine stomach for testing.
  • Evaluated basic surgical tasks: cutting, dissection, suturing, and knot tying.
  • Measured task completion time and leak pressure for suture integrity.

Main Results:

  • All basic surgical tasks were achievable with the EndoSAMURAI platform.
  • Task performance precision and accuracy were comparable to standard laparoscopy.
  • Gastric closure leak pressures were similar between EndoSAMURAI and laparoscopic techniques.

Conclusions:

  • The EndoSAMURAI platform demonstrates viable functionality for NOTES procedures.
  • While task completion time was longer, the platform ensures precise surgical execution.
  • The system provides reliable gastric closure, comparable to laparoscopic methods.
