Summary

Migraine patients exhibit deficits in face recognition and visuospatial perception, even between migraine attacks. These impairments, particularly evident in migraine without aura, suggest underlying neurological differences.

Background:

  • Prosopagnosia, or face blindness, is a rare condition sometimes observed during migraine aura.
  • Previous research has not investigated face recognition in migraineurs during the interictal period.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess face recognition abilities in migraineurs during the interictal period.
  • To explore the relationship between face recognition deficits and clinical features of migraine.
  • To evaluate visuospatial perception in migraineurs.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 74 migraine patients (with or without aura) and 37 healthy controls.
  • Participants underwent the Benton Face Recognition Test (BFRT) and the Judgment of Line Orientation Test (LOT).
  • International Headache Society criteria were used for migraine diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Migraineurs performed significantly worse on both the BFRT and LOT compared to controls.
  • Impaired visuospatial perception was identified in migraineurs.
  • The visuospatial and face recognition deficits were more pronounced in patients with migraine without aura.

  • Migraineurs demonstrate diminished performance in both face recognition and visuospatial perception.
