Resistance training in hemodialysis patients: a review

Purpose:
Few studies have examined the role of resistance training (RT) in chronic kidney patients on hemodialysis (HD). This study reviews the literature about resistance exercise for patients on HD and describes protocols and clinical outcomes.
Methods:
A search of the MEDLINE database found 21 eligible publications, of which 14 studies applied only RT and 7 combined RT and aerobic training.
Findings:
Regarding the period of exercise training, 14 studies applied intradialytic exercise. The main outcome reported was muscle strength, which was assessed through knee strength and handgrip measures.
Conclusions:
All studies reviewed presented at least one significant result in relation to biochemical parameters, physical capacity, strength, body composition, or quality of life.
Clinical Relevance:
This review demonstrates that RT improves muscle strength, some biochemical parameters, and quality of life of the HD patients.
