This study investigated chromosome aberrations in Mayak PA workers exposed to ionizing radiation (IR). A background translocation yield and a dose threshold of approximately 1 Gy were established for indicating prolonged IR exposure.
Area of Science:
- Cytogenetics
- Radiation Biology
- Occupational Health
Background:
- Prolonged occupational exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can lead to chromosomal damage.
- Monitoring IR exposure in workers is crucial for occupational health.
- Mayak Production Association (PA) workers have a history of significant radiation exposure.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate chromosome aberration (translocation) yield in Mayak PA workers.
- To estimate a dose threshold for cytogenetic indication of prolonged occupational radiation exposure.
- To establish limits for indicating IR exposure in workers.
Main Methods:
- Multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mFISH) was used to analyze peripheral blood lymphocytes.
- Functions of dose distributions were employed to estimate dose thresholds.
- Background translocation yield and dose threshold for IR exposure were determined.
Main Results:
- Chromosome aberration (translocation) yield was analyzed in Mayak PA workers.
- A background translocation yield (N₀) was estimated at 0.812 ± 0.149%.
- A dose threshold (D₀) for indicating IR exposure was found to be approximately 1 Gy.
Conclusions:
- The study provides cytogenetic indicators for prolonged occupational radiation exposure in Mayak PA workers.
- A dose threshold of approximately 1 Gy can be used to indicate significant IR exposure.
- These findings contribute to the assessment and management of radiation exposure in occupational settings.
