This study investigated the Interleukin-6 (IL-6) -174 G/C polymorphism in Malaysia. Significant differences in allele frequencies were found among Malays, Chinese, and Indians, with the C allele notably absent in Chinese.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Immunology
- Population Studies
Background:
- Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine linked to various diseases, including cancers.
- The IL-6 -174 (G/C) gene polymorphism exhibits varying frequencies across different ethnic populations.
- Understanding these frequencies is crucial for disease risk assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the allele frequency of the IL-6 -174 (G/C) polymorphism.
- To compare these frequencies across three major Malaysian ethnic groups: Malays, Chinese, and Indians.
Main Methods:
- Genotyping of 348 blood samples from Malays, Chinese, and Indians.
- Analysis of Interleukin-6 (IL-6) -174 G/C allele frequencies.
Main Results:
- A significant difference in IL-6 -174 G/C allele frequencies was observed among the ethnic groups.
- The overall frequencies for G and C alleles were 91.0% and 9.0%, respectively.
- The C allele frequency was 4.0% in Malays and 19.0% in Indians, but not detected in Chinese.
Conclusions:
- This study provides the first report on IL-6 -174 G/C polymorphism frequencies in the Malaysian population.
- The distinct allele frequencies among ethnic groups may influence disease susceptibility related to IL-6.
- Further research is warranted to explore the clinical implications of these findings.
