Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the external root surface temperature rise generated by three different post space preparation methods: LA Axxess bur, Beefill pack System, and Peeso Reamer drill.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-five extracted human mandibular first molars were prepared and obturated.
  • Teeth were randomly assigned to three groups for post space preparation using either LA Axxess bur, Beefill pack System, or Peeso Reamer drill.
  • Root surface temperature was measured using a digital thermometer and analyzed with ANOVA.

Main Results:

  • The Beefill pack System resulted in significantly higher root surface temperatures (7.3±2.7°C) compared to the LA Axxess bur (4.3±2.1°C) and Peeso Reamer drill (4±2.4°C) (P<0.02).

Conclusions:

  • The Beefill pack System may pose a hazard to periodontal tissues due to increased temperature generation during post space preparation.
  • Clinicians should consider the thermal implications when selecting a post space preparation method.
