This case report highlights a rare instance of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) in a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). Early diagnosis and chemotherapy led to patient improvement.
Area of Science:
- Pulmonology
- Oncology
- Rheumatology
Background:
- Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is rarely associated with malignancy.
- Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an exceptionally rare lung malignancy in PSS patients.
Observation:
- A 55-year-old non-smoking female with a one-year history of PSS presented with cough, dyspnea, and unilateral edema.
- Imaging revealed a right upper lobe lung mass, bilateral pleural effusion, and interstitial lung disease consistent with non-specific interstitial pneumonia.
- CT-guided fine needle aspiration cytology confirmed SCLC.
Findings:
- The patient was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) in the context of progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS).
- Treatment with carboplatin and etoposide chemotherapy resulted in clinical improvement.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of considering rare malignancies in PSS patients.
- Prompt diagnosis and treatment of SCLC in PSS can lead to favorable outcomes.
