Health-promoting work breaks, or Booster Breaks, were studied. Participants reported positive feelings, improved health, and team bonding as benefits, but faced barriers like time constraints and lack of support.
Area of Science:
- Occupational Health
- Behavioral Science
- Workplace Wellness
Background:
- Health-promoting work breaks, termed Booster Breaks, are increasingly recognized for their potential to improve employee well-being.
- Understanding participant experiences is crucial for effective implementation and sustainability.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify the perceived benefits of participating in health-promoting work breaks (Booster Breaks).
- To determine the barriers encountered by participants engaging in these breaks.
- To gather insights from individuals with extensive experience (6 months to 1 year) with Booster Breaks.
Main Methods:
- Employed the story path method of inquiry for data collection.
- Conducted extensive face-to-face interviews covering past, present, and future time frames.
- Utilized group consensus processes to identify key themes.
Main Results:
- Top-ranked benefits included positive feelings, improved health, and enhanced team camaraderie.
- Primary barriers identified were time constraints/work flow interruption, lack of interest, and insufficient organizational support.
Conclusions:
- Findings highlight key benefits to promote and barriers to address when implementing health-promoting work breaks.
- Emphasizing positive feelings, health improvements, and team cohesion can enhance participation.
- Addressing time constraints and securing management support are critical for sustained engagement.
