Pathological fracture in chronic osteomyelitis

Abstract:
Little has been written in the literature concerning the pathological fracture of the long bones in chronic osteomyelitis, although it has been thought to be not uncommon in practice.Authors present five cases of pathological fractures of the long bones as a complication of chronic osteomyelitis. Three fractures occurred in tibiae and two in femurs. Two tibial fractures were treated by amputation surgery, and one tibial and two femoral fractures healed after systemic and local treatments. A most important factor affecting fracture healing of the pathological fracture is the condition of surrounding soft tissues.
