[Curative resection of a solitary clavicular metastasis]

Metastatic breast cancer is currently not considered curable, with patients being considered only for palliative systemic therapy. However, long-term disease-free survival has been reported in some patients with limited metastatic disease following surgical resection as part of multidisciplinary therapy.

A 49-year-old woman presented with pain and swelling at her left clavicle. Four years previously, she had been treated with breast-conserving therapy and adjuvant systemic therapy for lobular breast cancer (pT1N0M0). After additional imaging and biopsy, solitary clavicular metastasis was diagnosed. The patient was treated with curative intent by induction chemotherapy followed by medial clavicle resection, adjuvant radiotherapy, and a switch in endocrine therapy.

Solitary clavicular metastasis of breast cancer is rare. In patients with solitary bone metastasis secondary to breast cancer with a favourable prognosis, surgical resection with curative intent can be considered as part of the multidisciplinary treatment.
