Summary

Sinus lift procedures for dental implants may increase complications without clear benefits over short implants. Different sinus lift techniques show no significant difference in implant or prosthesis failure rates.

Area of Science:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Dental Implantology
  • Regenerative Medicine

Background:

  • Insufficient bone volume in the posterior maxilla limits dental implant rehabilitation.
  • Maxillary sinus proximity and alveolar bone height loss are key challenges.
  • Sinus lift procedures augment bone volume using grafts or biomaterials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate bone augmentation versus no augmentation in sinus lift procedures.
  • To compare the efficacy and safety of various maxillary sinus lift techniques for dental implants.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Searched Cochrane Oral Health, CENTRAL, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases.
  • Included RCTs reporting implant success/failure at least four months post-loading.

Main Results:

  • Moderate-quality evidence suggests sinus lifts may increase complications compared to short implants.
  • Insufficient evidence to support differences in prosthesis or implant failure between sinus lift and short implants.
  • No significant benefit found for different sinus lift techniques regarding implant or prosthesis failure.

Conclusions:

  • Sinus lift procedures show no clear advantage over short implants for failure rates but increase complications.
  • Current evidence does not support one sinus lift technique over another for reducing implant failures.
  • Patients may prefer rotary instruments over hand malleting for crestal sinus lifts.
