Background:

Health IT presents both opportunities and risks to clinical workflows.
Continuous measurement of health IT efficacy and efficiency is crucial.
Information Technology (IT) benchmarks are established tools for performance evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

To enhance an existing IT benchmarking methodology.
Incorporate novel indicators for clinical workflows.
Introduce new visualization techniques for benchmark data.

Main Methods:

Utilized the concept of information logistics to define four workflow descriptors.
Applied these descriptors to four distinct clinical processes.
Derived general and specific indicators from descriptors and processes.
Conducted benchmarking with 199 chief information officers (CIOs) from 259 hospitals, forming reference groups based on size and ownership.

Main Results:

The enhanced benchmarking procedure received overwhelmingly positive evaluations (98.4% rated as very good, good, or rather good).
Participants utilized benchmark information for strategic IT decision-making, including general overviews, IT advancement, negotiation preparation, and project justification.

Conclusions:

The enhanced IT benchmarking methodology is effective and well-received by healthcare IT professionals.
The study provides a valuable framework for improving the assessment and management of health IT within clinical settings.
