  • Searched Cochrane Schizophrenia Group Trials Register (up to Feb 2013) for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
  • Included RCTs focused on pericyazine for schizophrenia and schizophrenia-like psychoses, excluding quasi-randomized trials.
  • Extracted data independently, calculated risk ratios (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI), assessed risk of bias, and used GRADE for evidence quality.

Main Results:

  • Only five studies (1965-1980) met inclusion criteria, with significant reporting deficiencies.
  • Evidence quality was very low; pericyazine showed no clear benefit over typical or atypical antipsychotics for global state improvement.
  • Pericyazine was associated with more extrapyramidal side effects than typical and atypical antipsychotics.

Conclusions:

  • Due to very low quality evidence, the effects of pericyazine for schizophrenia remain undetermined.
  • A potential increased incidence of extrapyramidal side effects with pericyazine requires further investigation.
  • Large, robust studies are essential to draw firm conclusions on pericyazine's efficacy and safety.
