A comprehensive HIV stigma-reduction and wellness-enhancement community intervention: a case study
This study implemented a community intervention to reduce HIV stigma and enhance wellness for people living with HIV (PLWH) and their social networks. The intervention improved knowledge, coping, and relationships, leading to reduced stigma and increased disclosure among PLWH.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Community Psychology
- Social Sciences
Background:
- HIV stigma remains a significant barrier to wellness and disclosure for people living with HIV (PLWH).
- Community-based interventions are crucial for addressing stigma and enhancing the well-being of PLWH and their social networks.
- Existing interventions may not adequately address the complex dynamics between PLWH and their close relations (PLCs).
Purpose of the Study:
- To implement and evaluate a comprehensive HIV stigma-reduction and wellness-enhancement community intervention.
- To assess the intervention's impact on people living with HIV (PLWH) and people living close to them (PLCs).
- To explore the intervention's effectiveness in urban and rural settings in South Africa.
Main Methods:
- A holistic multiple case study design was employed in the North West Province, South Africa.
- Purposive voluntary sampling recruited PLWH; snowball sampling recruited PLCs from six designated groups.
- Data were analyzed using open coding and text document analysis.
Main Results:
- The intervention enhanced relationships across all participant groups.
- Increased knowledge of stigma and improved coping mechanisms led to reduced stigma and greater willingness to disclose among PLWH.
- PLCs gained awareness of stigmatizing behaviors and were empowered to lead stigma reduction efforts.
Conclusions:
- Comprehensive community interventions can effectively reduce HIV stigma and improve wellness.
- Empowering PLCs is vital for sustainable stigma reduction within communities.
- The intervention demonstrated broad reach and positive impacts on both PLWH and their social networks.
