Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

1.2K
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Pain Management
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Surgical Outcomes

Background:

  • Postlaparoscopic shoulder pain (PLSP) is a frequent complication following abdominal laparoscopic surgery.
  • Existing analgesic treatments may not fully alleviate moderate to severe PLSP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in managing postlaparoscopic shoulder pain.
  • To assess acupuncture's impact on general pain levels in surgical patients.

Main Methods:

  • Acupuncture treatment was administered to patients with moderate to severe PLSP unresponsive to analgesics.
  • Pain severity was quantified using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after treatment.
  • Individualized acupuncture protocols were based on traditional Chinese medicine diagnoses.

Main Results:

  • A significant reduction in PLSP was observed (mean decrease of 6.4 ± 2.3, P < 0.0001).
  • General pain also showed a significant decrease (mean decrease of 6.4 ± 2.1, P < 0.0001).
  • No significant adverse effects were reported during the study.

Conclusions:

  • Individualized acupuncture, guided by traditional Chinese medicine, can effectively complement conventional therapy for PLSP.
  • Acupuncture demonstrates potential as a safe and beneficial treatment for post-surgical pain.
  • Further controlled studies are recommended to validate these findings.
