    Area of Science:

    • Obstetrics and Gynecology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in pregnancy.
    • Symptomatic UTIs in pregnancy are associated with low-count bacteriuria.
    • Cystourethritis incidence is approximately 12%, predominantly in the first trimester.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of multiple-dose nitrofurantoin versus ampicillin for acute uncomplicated UTIs in pregnant women.
    • To compare cure rates and potential adverse outcomes between the two treatment groups.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study involving 103 symptomatic pregnant women with confirmed UTIs.
    • Randomized grouping to receive either oral nitrofurantoin (100 mg t.i.d.) or ampicillin (500 mg t.i.d.) for five days.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Follow-up assessments to determine treatment outcomes and complications.
  • Main Results:

    • Overall cure rates ranged from 87% to 89% for both nitrofurantoin and ampicillin.
    • Escherichia coli was the most common pathogen, identified in 67% of infections.
    • No significant differences in efficacy were observed between the two antibiotic regimens.

    Conclusions:

    • Both nitrofurantoin and ampicillin are safe and effective options for treating acute uncomplicated UTIs in pregnant patients.
    • The study supports the use of these antibiotics in obstetric patients with symptomatic lower UTIs.
    • Monitoring for complications like pyelonephritis remains important during pregnancy.
