E-learning modules offer a promising avenue for gatekeeper suicide prevention training. However, more randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm their effectiveness and identify key design features for optimal impact.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Education Technology
- Mental Health Training
Background:
- E-learning modules present a viable method for educating gatekeepers on suicide prevention and awareness.
- Gatekeeper training is crucial for early identification and intervention in suicide prevention efforts.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review and overview existing e-learning modules for gatekeeper suicide prevention.
- To assess the current effectiveness of these online educational tools.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO.
- A Google search identified available e-learning modules on the web.
- Module-owning organizations were contacted, and a subset was included in the review.
Main Results:
- A literature search yielded 448 papers, with none meeting inclusion criteria.
- A Google search identified 130 potential modules, with 23 meeting criteria.
- Nine modules were included after contacting organizations; effectiveness data is limited, with some modules undergoing or planning evaluation via randomized controlled trials (RCTs).
Conclusions:
- There is a significant need for rigorous randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of online suicide prevention modules for gatekeepers.
- Further research should identify essential characteristics of e-learning modules that contribute to effective gatekeeper education in suicide prevention.

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness
Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...
