A CBT-based psychoeducational intervention for suicide survivors: a cluster randomized controlled study.

Summary

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based psychoeducational intervention did not significantly reduce depression or complicated grief in suicide survivors. However, it may offer supportive counseling and decrease symptom intensity and passive coping styles.

Background:

Suicide bereavement increases risks for depression, complicated grief, and suicidal ideation.
Few studies have investigated interventions for suicide survivors.
Suicide survivors face unique mental health challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the effects of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)-based psychoeducational intervention.
To assess the intervention's impact on depression, complicated grief, and suicide risk factors in suicide survivors.

Main Methods:

A cluster randomized controlled trial involving 83 suicide survivors.
Randomization to either an intervention or a control group.
Primary outcomes included maladaptive grief, depression, suicidal ideation, and hopelessness; secondary outcomes included grief cognitions and coping styles.

Main Results:

The intervention showed no significant effect on primary outcome measures.
A significant decrease in grief symptom intensity and depressive symptoms was observed in the intervention group.
Passive coping styles significantly decreased in the intervention group compared to the control group.

Conclusions:

The CBT-based psychoeducational intervention did not significantly impact complicated grief, depression, or suicide risk factors.
The intervention may function as supportive counseling for suicide survivors.
Further research is needed to explore effective interventions for this population.
