Summary

Transoral robotic supraglottic laryngectomy is a feasible, safe, and effective surgical option for early supraglottic cancer. Initial outcomes show successful resection with negative margins, but long-term oncologic safety requires further evaluation.

Background:

  • Supraglottic laryngeal carcinoma presents a significant oncologic challenge.
  • Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) offers a minimally invasive approach for head and neck cancers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the initial clinical experience with transoral robotic supraglottic laryngectomy (TORS-SL) for early-stage supraglottic cancer.
  • To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and short-term outcomes of TORS-SL.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective review of patients with early squamous cell carcinoma (T1-T2) of the supraglottic region treated with TORS.
  • Evaluation of surgical technique, operative time, blood loss, margin status, postoperative recovery, and complications.

Main Results:

  • Thirteen patients underwent successful TORS-SL with all achieving negative margins.
  • Mean operative time was 31.6 minutes, with minimal blood loss (<40 mL).
  • Patients experienced a mean of 10.8 days to oral nutrition and 15.4 days of hospitalization.

  • Transoral robotic supraglottic laryngectomy is a feasible, safe, and effective technique for early supraglottic cancer.
