Naturalistic Observations02:30

Naturalistic Observations

15.2K
If you want to understand how behavior occurs, one of the best ways to gain information is to simply observe the behavior in its natural context. However, people might change their behavior in unexpected ways if they know they are being observed. How do researchers obtain accurate information when people tend to hide their natural behavior? As an example, imagine that your professor asks everyone in your class to raise their hand if they always wash their hands after using the restroom. Chances...

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

9.9K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

Parental Care00:55

Parental Care

11.6K
Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young.

Summary

Calf behavior shows social grouping in creches, with proximity influenced by age and sire breed. Females and Charolais-sired calves exhibited more sociable creche behavior.

Area of Science:

  • Animal Behavior
  • Ethology
  • Livestock Science

Background:

  • Calf housing and social dynamics are crucial for welfare and development.
  • Understanding creche behavior in young cattle provides insights into social bonding and environmental responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the creche behavior of young cattle (Hereford x Friesian and Friesian x Hereford) on hill pasture.
  • To determine factors influencing creche formation, size, and composition.

Main Methods:

  • Observational study over four months (June-September) on hill pasture.
  • Utilized scan sampling and focal animal sampling techniques.
  • Defined creche as calves lying within 20 meters of their nearest neighbor.

Main Results:

  • Creche size varied with time of day and calf age, with larger creches in the morning.
  • Calves showed preference for lying with familiar group members and same-breed crosses.
  • Females and calves with Charolais sires displayed more sociable behavior.

Conclusions:

  • Creche behavior is influenced by age, sire breed, sex, and previous social grouping.
  • Environmental factors like weather can affect resting place selection.
  • Social preferences within creches highlight the importance of early life social environment.
