Background:

  • Manual dexterity impairment is a common and debilitating symptom in multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • There is a need for accessible, rapid, and validated tools to assess manual dexterity in MS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the Coin Rotation Task (CRT) as a measure of manual dexterity in individuals with MS.
  • To assess the concurrent and construct validity, as well as the diagnostic accuracy of the CRT.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 101 outpatients with MS.
  • Assessment included the CRT, Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Scale for the Assessment and Rating of Ataxia (SARA), and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS).
  • Concurrent validity was assessed against the 9-Hole Peg Test (9HPT); construct validity against a dexterity questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • The CRT demonstrated good concurrent validity with the 9HPT (r=.73, P<.0001).
  • High sensitivity and specificity were found for CRT cutoff values, indicating good diagnostic accuracy.
  • Moderate construct validity was observed (r=-.49, P<.0001), with EDSS identified as the strongest predictor of impaired dexterity.

Conclusions:

  • The Coin Rotation Task (CRT) is a validated tool for the rapid and easy evaluation of manual dexterity in people with MS.
  • The CRT is a reliable measure for assessing hand function deficits in the context of MS progression and disability.
