A new plane source method using thin-layer chromatography effectively assesses Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner image quality by estimating the modulation transfer function (MTF). This technique is less noisy than traditional line source methods.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Medical Imaging
  • Computational Phantoms

Background:

  • Accurate image quality assessment is crucial for Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scanner performance.
  • Traditional methods, such as line source analysis, can be prone to noise and limitations.
  • Developing novel, robust methods for modulation transfer function (MTF) estimation is essential for advancing PET imaging.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To propose and validate a novel method for PET image quality assessment using a plane source to estimate the modulation transfer function (MTF).
  • To compare the proposed plane source method with the conventional line source technique.
  • To utilize Monte Carlo simulations for accurate modeling and assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Simulations were performed using the Geant4 application for tomographic emission (GATE) Monte Carlo package.

  • A novel plane source was designed using a thin-layer chromatography plate with (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose.
  • Image reconstruction was achieved using 3D filtered back projection (FBP3DRP) and ordered-subsets expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithms via the STIR software.
  • Main Results:

    • The ordered-subsets expectation maximization (OSEM) algorithm preserved higher frequencies compared to FBP3DRP.
    • The plane source method demonstrated significantly lower noise levels (SD=0.0031) than the conventional line source method (SD=0.0203).
    • The novel method provides a more robust estimation of the modulation transfer function (MTF).

    Conclusions:

    • The thin-layer chromatography-based plane source is a practical and accessible tool for clinical environments.
    • This method offers a reliable approach for assessing PET image quality and can aid in scanner development.
    • The study highlights the potential of Monte Carlo simulations in advancing PET and SPECT scanner technology.
