Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV01:26

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

365
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Cognitive Dissonance01:38

Cognitive Dissonance

29.1K
Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Personality traits are linked to healthy lifestyles, including smoking behavior.
  • Positivity (POS), a disposition for a positive outlook, is associated with psychological health.
  • Understanding POS's role in smoking cessation is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the predictive power of Positivity (POS) on smoking relapse.
  • To assess the association between POS and the desire to smoke again.
  • To determine if POS influences the maintenance of smoking cessation efforts.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 481 individuals who previously attended a Group Counselling Program (GCP) for Smoking Cessation were interviewed.
  • Participants included 244 ex-smokers and 237 current smokers.
  • Multivariate linear regression analysis assessed the association of POS with smoking status and craving, controlling for personality, gender, and age.

Main Results:

  • Positivity (POS) was significantly and negatively associated with smoking status.
  • POS showed a significant negative association with craving to smoke.
  • Gender was also found to be associated with smoking status and craving.

Conclusions:

  • Positivity (POS) plays a significant role in supporting individuals' smoking cessation.
  • Interventions aimed at enhancing POS may improve smoking cessation outcomes.
  • Further research should explore the mechanisms through which POS influences smoking behavior.
