The CD14 gene -260C/T polymorphism may increase gastric cancer risk in individuals infected with Helicobacter pylori. Further research is needed to confirm this association between CD14 gene variants and cancer susceptibility.
Area of Science:
- Genetics
- Oncology
- Epidemiology
Background:
- CD14 gene polymorphisms (-260C/T and -651C/T) are linked to cancer susceptibility.
- Previous studies on this association have yielded inconclusive results.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between CD14 gene polymorphisms (-260C/T and -651C/T) and cancer risk.
- To clarify the role of these polymorphisms in cancer development.
Main Methods:
- A meta-analysis of eligible case-control studies published up to March 2014.
- Searched major databases: PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and WanFang.
- Pooled odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects models.
Main Results:
- Included 17 studies with 4198 cases and 4194 controls for -260C/T, and 3 studies with 832 cases and 1190 controls for -651C/T.
- No significant overall association was found between CD14 polymorphisms and cancer risk.
- A subgroup analysis revealed that the CD14 -260C/T polymorphism might increase gastric cancer risk in H. pylori-infected individuals.
Conclusions:
- The CD14 -260C/T polymorphism may elevate gastric cancer risk specifically in H. pylori-infected individuals.
- Further large-scale, well-designed studies are necessary to validate these findings.

When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
