Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

6.1K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

38.0K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

Alterations in Blood Pressure01:30

Alterations in Blood Pressure

2.1K
Alterations in blood pressure, such as hypertension (high blood pressure) and hypotension (low blood pressure), significantly affect human health. Understanding these conditions' classifications, causes, and symptoms is essential for effective management and treatment.
Hypertension (High blood pressure)
Hypertension occurs when blood pressure readings consistently exceed the normal range. It is diagnosed when systolic blood pressure (the top number, indicating pressure while the heart...

The Cochlea01:13

The Cochlea

40.9K
The cochlea is a coiled structure in the inner ear that contains hair cells—the sensory receptors of the auditory system. Sound waves are transmitted to the cochlea by small bones attached to the eardrum called the ossicles, which vibrate the oval window that leads to the inner ear. This causes fluid in the chambers of the cochlea to move, vibrating the basilar membrane.

Mitral Valve Prolapse II: Assessment and Management

1.4K
IntroductionA range of clinical features characterizes Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), but it is important to note that many individuals with MVP are asymptomatic and may remain so throughout their lives. For those who do exhibit symptoms, the following are the key clinical features:Palpitations: This is a common symptom where individuals feel an irregular or rapid heartbeat. Palpitations in MVP are often due to arrhythmias such as premature ventricular contractions or supraventricular...

Dysrhythmias II: Classification of Tachyarrhythmias

734
Tachyarrhythmias are a type of dysrhythmia where the heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute. Here are some common types of tachyarrhythmias:Sinus TachycardiaSinus tachycardia originates from increased impulses from the sinus node, leading to an elevated heart rate. It is often triggered by stress, fever, or exercise.Patients may experience palpitations, a sensation of a racing heart, dizziness, and chest discomfort.Causes and Risk Factors: Common causes include physical exertion, emotional...

Summary

Nearly 20% of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) patients experienced concurrent tinnitus. This tinnitus was typically mild, intermittent, and on the same side as the BPPV, often resolving with treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurology
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Clinical observations suggest a link between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and tinnitus onset.
  • Some patients report tinnitus preceding or coinciding with BPPV episodes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of tinnitus in BPPV patients.
  • To characterize the clinical presentation of associated tinnitus.
  • To explore potential explanations for this association.

Main Methods:

  • 171 normal-hearing BPPV patients underwent audiological and vestibular assessments.
  • Tinnitus severity and impact were evaluated using visual analogue scales and the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory.
  • Assessments were performed before and after repositioning maneuvers.

Main Results:

  • Tinnitus occurred concurrently with BPPV in 19.3% of patients.
  • The tinnitus was predominantly unilateral, ipsilateral to the BPPV, mild, and intermittent.
  • Tinnitus resolved or diminished in most patients following treatment or spontaneously.

Conclusions:

  • A vestibular etiology for tinnitus in BPPV is proposed.
  • Detachment of macular debris into the ductus reuniens and cochlear duct may cause tinnitus.
  • This suggests a potential shared pathophysiology between BPPV and certain types of tinnitus.
