Summary

Recurrent follicular thyroid carcinoma was effectively treated with endoscopic photodynamic therapy (PDT) eight years post-initial treatment. This innovative approach led to complete endoscopic remission and significant symptom improvement in the patient.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Endocrinology
  • Medical Technology

Background:

  • Follicular thyroid carcinoma can recur years after primary treatment.
  • Standard treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, and radio-iodine may not always achieve complete remission.
  • Recurrence poses significant management challenges.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case study of follicular thyroid carcinoma recurrence.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic photodynamic therapy (PDT) in managing recurrent thyroid cancer.
  • To assess symptom relief and long-term response to PDT.

Main Methods:

  • A patient with confirmed follicular thyroid carcinoma recurrence 8 years post-treatment was selected.
  • Endoscopic photodynamic therapy (PDT) was administered as the primary treatment modality.
  • Patient response was monitored endoscopically over 12 months.

Main Results:

  • The patient achieved complete endoscopic response following PDT.
  • Significant and sustained symptom relief was observed.
  • PDT demonstrated a favorable outcome in managing a challenging recurrence.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a viable and effective treatment option for recurrent follicular thyroid carcinoma.
  • PDT offers a minimally invasive approach with good symptom control.
  • This case highlights PDT's potential in managing refractory thyroid cancer cases.
