Summary

Shorter or longer sleep durations were initially linked to increased body mass index (BMI). However, after accounting for unobserved individual factors, this association between sleep duration and BMI changes disappeared, suggesting less impact on weight gain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the longitudinal association between sleep duration and changes in BMI.
  • To address limitations of prior research by using repeated measurements and panel data analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized panel data from mandatory health checkups of male non-shift workers (aged 19-39) in Japan from 2007 to 2010.
  • Employed secondary data analysis with annual follow-ups (n=1687, 6748 records).
  • Objectively measured BMI and self-reported sleep duration.

Main Results:

  • Initial analysis (population-averaged model) indicated significant BMI increases for 5-hour (0.11 kg/m²), 6-hour (0.07 kg/m²), and ≥8-hour (0.19 kg/m²) sleepers compared to 7-hour sleepers.
  • After adjusting for unobserved time-invariant confounders (fixed-effects model), these associations were significantly attenuated and became non-significant.

Conclusions:

  • The observed longitudinal association between sleep duration and BMI changes may be upwardly biased by unobserved, stable individual factors.
  • The actual net effect of sleep duration on weight gain might be less substantial than previously suggested by observational studies.
