Area of Science:

  • Surgical innovation
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Minimally invasive procedures

Background:

  • Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) is the standard treatment.
  • Various techniques exist for appendix stump closure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes of using a hand-made loop for appendix stump closure during LA.
  • To assess the safety and efficacy of this specific closure method.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of patient files.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy performed using 3 ports.
  • Appendix stump closure achieved with two loops, a modification of the Roeder loop.

Main Results:

  • Study included 61 patients (39% female, 61% male), aged 13-60 years (average 30).
  • No cases of appendix stump leakage were observed.
  • Postoperative complications included one surgical wound infection and two intra-abdominal abscesses.

Conclusions:

  • Appendix stump closure technique impacts the overall cost of LA.
  • Hand-made loops offer an economical alternative to staplers, endoloops, or clips.
  • The hand-made loop is recommended as an easy, safe, and cost-effective method for stump closure.
